Talar coalitions present a unique challenge in the adolescent dancer since the coalitions form between 8 to 16 years of age. The recognition of talar coalitions can be delayed by the overall low incidence of coalitions, approximately 1% in the general population. The goal of this presentation is to briefly outline the normal anatomy and mechanics of the foot and then to contrast this with the pathomechanics of the two most common types of talar coalitions. A case study will outline the initial presentation of a calcaneonavicular coalition in an adolescent ballet dancer, the imaging studies required for diagnosis, course of treatment, and outcome.
