Jill Esterson, PT, Westside Dance Physical Therapy, Jordan D. Metzl, MD, Hospital for Special Surgery; New York, NY, USA
Stress fractures are common injuries in dancers, and have significant implications for a dance career of any level. Common sites of stress fractures in dancers include metatarsals, tibia, and lumbar spine. In the past 20 years, the approach to stress fractures has changed considerably. This interactive workshop will provide a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of stress fractures in dancers. Attention will be given towards importance of associated medical issues that might cause stress fracture, and also to the role of the health professional in ensuring that dancers receive appropriate, comprehensive medical attention before returning to dance after a stress fracture. Following a didactic presentation on the history of stress fractures, the current standards of diagnosis, treatment, and issues of rehabilitation from specific stress fractures will be addressed. Lastly, a panel discussion of a physician, physical therapist, and dancer will field audience questions and encourage discussion.
