Presentation of a website dedicated to dance medicine

Michel Canesi, MD, Anne Thiescé, MD, Rudolf Nureyev Foundation, Paris, France

1) Why a medical web site?
First of all, we wanted to respect the wishes of Rudolf Nureyev who, for the love of his art, specified in his will that one of the goals of his foundation should be the health and well-being of dancers.
Secondly, dance is not only an art but also an athletic discipline which tests the human body to the utmost creating a very specific area of medical concern which has now its specific space on the Internet.

2) A section devoted to dancers:
This area is freely accessible not only to dancers but also to anyone in need of medical information or advice. Topics covered range from treating and preventing body injuries to advice on nutrition. Articles are cross-referenced and can be accessed by keyword, by parts of the body or by category. For example, a dancer can easily find information about diets, diseases of the joints, body metabolism, physiotherapy, etc.

3) A section devoted to health professionals.
This part of the site, accessible only by password, allows doctors and other medical professionals to discuss and publish their articles. The website incorporates technology which allows health professionals to easily publish their articles and accompanying illustrations directly from their own computers, guaranteeing a constantly updated medical database.
