This presentation describes a lecture series model for pre-professional dancers that integrates the issues of artistry and professionalism with nutritional and behavioral issues. The “Nutrition for Optimal Performance” seminar series was held at the School of the San Francisco Ballet in 1999, and was attended by both boys and girls of the levels V-VII, who were approximately 14 to 18 years old.
The series was composed of 4 one and one-half hour interactive seminars, one introductory seminar for all levels in the spring, and 3 differing seminars in the fall. Attendees for the entire series were awarded a certificate of completion. Titles of the respective seminars include “Dancer Well-Being and Striving for Excellence,” “How to Assess if You Want/Should Lose Weight or Gain Weight,” “Assessment of Current Habits and A Look at Bad Habits,” and “Safe and Sane Weight Loss or Gain.”
As part of the interactive element of the seminars, the dancers in the 1999 series were required to participate in such exercises as to calculate their basal metabolic indices and make a food list of frequently and not frequently eaten foods in order to qualify for the certificate of completion. They were also asked more difficult questions such as to identify and explain a food fad. Additionally, they were asked to specifically make a judgment about their own nutritional condition under strict confidence. The answers were often revealing about this population and will be shared with the audience.
