Upper body strengthening and mobility techniques for dancers

Baas, Jane MFA, MA, BS, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI, United States

PARTICIPANTS: Dancers, dance teachers, physical therapists and others interested in movement efficiency

PURPOSE: To introduce participants to common anatomical differences affecting dancers? upper body, strength and mobility techniques, and other strategies to promote stronger, more supple and functional upper bodies for dancers

APPROACH:  For this hands-on session, the presenter will briefly discuss how to identify common anatomical differences of the upper body and the implications for dancers.  Exercises for targeted strengthening, self-massage techniques, and other activities to help dancers address these challenges will be presented for participants to try.  Participants wishing to experience the entire session will need to be prepared to work on the floor.  Time will be provided for discussion following each application.

RELEVANCE:  Strong and supple upper bodies are critical for dancers to achieve their full potential, especially with the increased emphasis on weight-sharing and taking full body weight on the arms in today?s dance styles.  Teaching dancers simple techniques for improving strength and mobility may help with improved dance ability and decreased vulnerability to injury.

PRESENTER EXPERIENCE:  University dance educator since 1981; has taught kinesiology, conditioning and injury prevention at the University and conferences, workshops and seminars throughout the United States.
