Dancers routinely practice movements involving flexion, abduction and external rotation (FABER) of the hip. Repetition of these motions may cause symptoms of inflammation and pain in the anterior hip region. Procedures used to differentially diagnose hip pathology include history, physical exam, (palpation, passive and active motion testing, manual muscle testing) and various radiological tests will be described.
A review of the hip region pathologies commonly seen in dancers, including internal coax saltans, tendonitis, bursitis, capsulitis and labral tears will be reviewed along with practical suggestions for treatment and prevention.
